Description

Overview
The Anglo-Nubian is a distinctive and popular breed of domestic goat, developed in England through the crossbreeding of British goats with imported bucks from India, the Middle East, and North Africa, particularly the Nubian goats of Egypt. The result is a large, dual-purpose goat valued for both high-quality milk and meat production. Anglo-Nubians are easily recognized for their unique appearance and outgoing personalities.

Origin

In the 19th century, British breeders aimed to improve the size, milk yield, and hardiness of native goats by crossing them with imported breeds like the Zariby and Jamnapari. The crossbreeding efforts culminated in the Anglo-Nubian, officially recognized as a distinct breed in the early 20th century. Their name reflects their mixed heritage: “Anglo” for English, and “Nubian” from the Nubian goats of northeastern Africa.

Characteristics

Size and Build
Anglo-Nubians are among the largest dairy goat breeds. They have a long, deep, and wide body, giving them a substantial and robust appearance. Their frame is strong and muscular, making them suitable for meat production as well as dairy.

  • Weight:

    • Does (females): 135–175 pounds (61–80 kg)

    • Bucks (males): 175–310 pounds (80–140 kg)

  • Height at Withers:

    • Does: At least 30 inches (76 cm)

    • Bucks: At least 32 inches (81 cm)

Coat and Color
The coat is short, fine, and glossy. Anglo-Nubians come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, including solid, spotted, or patterned coats. Common colors include black, chestnut, tan, white, cream, and various mixes of these.

Distinctive Features

  • Ears: Long, wide, and pendulous, hanging down below the jawline and often flaring outwards at the tips.

  • Nose: A convex or “Roman” nose (curved outward), giving the breed a characteristic profile.

  • Horns: Both sexes can have horns, although many are disbudded (horns removed) for ease of handling.

Milk Production

Anglo-Nubians produce milk that is relatively high in butterfat, often between 4% and 5%, sometimes higher. This rich milk is especially prized for making cheeses, yogurts, and other dairy products where creaminess is desired. Although their overall milk volume can be less than Swiss-origin dairy breeds like Alpines or Saanens, the quality makes up for the quantity.

  • Average daily yield: 2 to 3 liters (though excellent individuals can produce more)

Temperament

Anglo-Nubians are known for their lively, affectionate, and vocal nature. They form strong bonds with their handlers and herd mates, often calling out loudly if they feel neglected. Their intelligence and curiosity make them easy to train, but they can also be stubborn and independent at times.

Key Traits:

  • Friendly and sociable

  • Highly vocal

  • Intelligent and sometimes mischievous

  • Adaptable to hot climates (thanks to their desert ancestry)
