Job Summary:
The Veterinary Officer will play a crucial role in ensuring the health and welfare of livestock at Semanhyia Farms and Clientele farms. This position involves providing hands-on veterinary care, assisting with routine check-ups, administering medication, and delivering extension services to farm workers. The Veterinary Nurse will also support purchasing and management of veterinary supplies, contributing to effective livestock health management across farms.
Key Responsibilities
- Veterinary Care & Routine Check-ups (30%)
– Assist in routine health examinations, vaccinations, and treatments of livestock on Semanhyia Farms and other partner farms.
– Monitor animal health and promptly report any signs of illness or injury to the supervising veterinarian.
– Assist with basic medical procedures such as wound dressing, suturing, and administering injections under the supervision of a veterinarian.
– Maintain up-to-date medical records for all livestock.
- Purchasing and Administration of Medication (10%)
– Help in sourcing, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of veterinary supplies and medications.
– Ensure proper storage and handling of veterinary medicines.
– Administer prescribed medications to animals as required ensuring proper dosages and treatment schedules.
- Extension Services (30%)
– Research and provide support for the
-Provide on-site and remote advisory support to farm workers and managers regarding livestock health, disease prevention, and proper care.
– Educate farm staff on biosecurity measures, animal handling techniques, and general animal welfare.
– Support outreach efforts to assist smaller partner farms with veterinary advice and services.
- Animal Health Management (15%)
– Work closely with the farm management team to develop and implement livestock health programs.
– Assist in training farm staff on early detection of diseases and effective health management techniques.
- Administrative and Reporting Duties (10%)
– Keep detailed records of all treatments, procedures, and health assessments.
– Prepare monthly reports on animal health and medication usage for review by the Farm Manager and Veterinarian.
– Assist in planning and coordinating routine health campaigns such as mass vaccinations or deworming schedules.
Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
– A diploma or degree in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Health (or related field).
Experience:
– Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in veterinary nursing or livestock health care.
– Experience with goats, cattle, or other farm animals preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
– Knowledge of animal anatomy, health care practices, and farm animal management.
– Ability to administer medications and assist in veterinary procedures.
– Strong communication skills for providing extension services and training to farm workers.
– Good organizational skills for managing medication inventory and record-keeping.
– Compassionate and patient when handling animals and interacting with farm staff.
Working Conditions:
