At Farming in Africa (FIA), we believe that the path to a sustainable livestock future is built on the strength of those who support and train our farmers. These frontline agents of change — extension officers, lecturers, field technicians, and local facilitators — are the critical bridge between innovation and practice.

In alignment with this belief, FIA, in strategic partnership with GIZ Agri-Business Facility for Africa (ABF MGF), hosted a transformative Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop focused on Small Ruminant Livestock at our Semanhyia Learning & Development Farm on June 5–6, 2025.

A Platform for Practical, Evidence-Based Learning

Over the course of two dynamic days, experts from Ghana and South Africa engaged over 60 professionals who work directly with grassroots livestock farmers across Ghana, specifically from the Northern, Ashanti, and Eastern regions.

The workshop focused on:

  • Advanced breeding techniques

  • Animal health and disease management

  • Optimized nutrition for small ruminants

  • Sustainable husbandry practices

By equipping these professionals with cutting-edge insights, FIA and its partners aim to ensure that the livestock revolution reaches the community level, where it matters most.

Distinguished Contributors

The workshop was skillfully moderated by Nadia Oppong, Head of Communications at FIA.

Our esteemed speakers and facilitators included:

  • Dr. Peter Asiedu – Senior Lecturer, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER), Ghana

  • Dr. Esther Fobi Donkor – Senior Lecturer, UNER, Ghana

  • Johan Barkhuizen – Veterinarian, South Africa

  • Werner Lingenfelder – Farmer, South Africa

The program was proudly hosted by Fredrick Benneh Frimpong, Founder & CEO of Farming in Africa (FIA). It was covered by some selected media houses in Ghana to enhance the advocacy for this revolution.

A Movement Toward Sustainable Livestock Systems

This workshop was not just an event — it marked a movement toward building sustainable livestock systems across Africa.

At FIA, we understand that real change happens at the grassroots, and that means investing in the people who engage directly with farmers every day. By strengthening the capacity of extension officers and facilitators, we help create a powerful ripple effect:

Better knowledge → Better practices → Better livestock → Better livelihoods

The Power of Partnerships

This impactful program would not have been possible without the unwavering support of GIZ ABF MGF, whose collaboration with FIA continues to fuel innovative capacity-building initiatives in the livestock sector.

Together, we are laying the foundation for a more resilient, productive, and sustainable future for Africa’s livestock farmers.

Join Us in Driving Change

At Farming in Africa, we are committed to scaling the impact of our Training of Trainers programs and developing more opportunities for agricultural professionals across the continent.
